What is Global Mala?
The purpose of the Global Mala Project is to unite the global yoga community on every continent, to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108. The Global Mala Project was launched in 2007 by international yoga teacher Shiva Rea. This year events will be held in over 100 cities around the world.
A mala is a string of 108 prayer beads used by Hindus and Buddhists to count the recitation of mantras or sacred chants. The number 108 is a sacred number in Hinduism and Buddhism, viewed by mathematicians of ancient Vedic culture as representing the wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth: the average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. In modern mathematics, 108 is a tetranacci number and considered a semi-perfect number.
